Lizard Island is the only resort located on a 1,013-hectare National Park and literally on the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island offers seclusion and natural privacy that you will cherish.
With only 40 rooms and villas and your choice of private beaches, escape to your own private beach for a day exploring the reef, taking in the incredible nature around you and all while never seeing another person.
Exploring and experiencing Lizard Island can be enjoyed by taking part in a number of guided tours, either to the inner and outer reefs, the Research Station, or on nature walks and challenging hikes to the top of Cook’s Look.
In 2015, Lizard Island Resort chose to install a Zhone Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) solution to enable delivery of the resort’s state of the art triple play network.
The GPON solution includes AFL connectivity, including pre-terminated fibre optic cable, splice enclosures and optical splitters (1:32) with Zhone’s MXK-198 OLTs (Optical Line Terminals) and 2426 ONUs (Optical Network Units).
Project Achievements / Outcomes :
Real estate requirements were reduced by up to 90%
- The bulk of the Category 6 cables required was dramatically reduced – this is better for the environment !
- Traditionally multiple Category 6 cabled were run to each hotel room or open area where replaced by one single fibre cable to each hotel room or open area.
- Space required for bulky cable trays in the roof space was dramatically reduced.
Less communications risers cupboards / racks.
- Traditional Category 6 ethernet cabling would required 1 x 45RU active communications rack per floor or area.
- GPON cabling solutions only require 1 x 45RU active communications rack for the active equipment for the building.
Contractor installation timed was reduced by 50%.
- Because less labour was required, to install less communications equipment.
- Also cost to transport equipment to the island was less expensive when compared to the original Category 6 design.
IT electricity consumption was reduced by up to 70%.
- There is less IT equipment required when comparing to traditional Category 6 ethernet equipment.
- This is great when you are running a IT network in a remote location !
